EYE LID SURGERY
Droopy or sagging eye lids can cause loss of peripheral vision and can
make someone look older than they really are. In many cases they also
cause signs of fatigue and tiredness.
Most of the cosmetic products advertised for the treatment either do not
work or, at best, offer temporary relief. Droopy and sagging looks often
require surgical intervention.
Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure performed to restore the
youthfulness of the eye lids. If performed correctly, it can freshen up the
lids and improve the over all look of them and decrease signs of aging.
How Procedure is done?
Procedure is done in the office using local anesthesia, mild sedation like
Valium may be given by mouth for relaxation. Eye lids are anesthetized
using Lidocaine, a local anesthetic. Some patients require procedure be
done in the outpatient surgery center if they require heavy sedation.
In upper lid Blepharpoplasty, an incision is made in the lid crease or
the fold so the scar becomes invisible as it heals. Extra skin which is
hanging down over the lid margin and excess fat is carefully removed.
In lower lid Blepharoplasty, an incision is made just under the eye
lash line and again it becomes invisible as it heals. Extra skin and excess
fat is removed.
Blepharoplasty is generally considered a cosmetic procedure and is,
therefore, not covered by insurance. However, in some cases upper lid
Blepharoplasty may be covered by insurance if the excessive skin is
causing loss of peripheral vision, which can be tested in the office using
perimeter or visual field analyzer. Insurance coverage varies from
carrier to carrier.
Blepharoplasty procedures are individualized to each person based on
their desire, anatomy, looks and ethnicity and results may vary from
person to person.
